Paeonia lactiflora & canary bird

This canary picture is a part of HOKUSAI’s famous work “Paeonia lactiflora & canary (芍薬とカナリア)”. “Paeonia lactiflora & canary" is also one of famous HOKUSAI's paint series "Flowers & Birds (花鳥画)".
 

 
Paeonia lactiflora bloom on end of spring in Japan. Its color, spring blue sky and lemon yellow of canary makes vivid contrast and people feel now that spring has come with it.
 

 
Canary was first imported to Nagasaki-city Japan in EDO period (1603–1868) by Dutch people. After that, soon it was very common fashion for people to have a cage bird and canary became one of most popular bird of cage bird because of its beautiful voice and color.
 
HOKUSAI painted colors and atmosphere of this feeling by drawing paeonia lactiflora and canary in this work.
 

 

Japanese traditional color
ENTAN

ENTAN color is a little yellowish red color.
It is color of pigment whose main component is Trilead Tetraoxide (Pb₃o₄).
 
This pigment was very expensive in NARA period (710-794) and it was used for painting temples and shrines.
 

 
So ENTAN color is one of representative color of Japanese traditional colors. Because it was so expensive at that period, sometimes red color soil was mixed with ENTAN pigment to reduce cost.
